Trekking to the Everest Base Camp doesn't come easy and free. It involves certain hassles, paperworks, and costs. You require either TIMS (Trekkers Information Management System), Permits, or both to get access to various Himalayan destination 

In this post, we'll share with you guys what TIMS and permits are, why they are necessary on your journey, and how you can obtain them to trek to the Everest Base Camp hassle-free.

What Are Permits?

Permits are documents issued by the Nepalese Government upon payment. These documents grant you permission to travel to designated areas without interference from local authorities.

As you embark on your journey, you'll encounter checkpoints where officials will request these documents. It is essential to present them for entry into the official record book.

In simple terms: permits represent the government's approval for your trekking request to a specific destination for a specified duration.

HEADS UP: You just need a couple of permits but not TIMS for the Everest region. TIMS isn't compulsory as it is in other trekking destinations.

Why Do You Need Permit To Trek To The Everest Region

Everest region is a hub for mountaineers and trekkers. Because of this every year thousands of adventure enthusiasts visit this region.

They visit these places because they want to experience the mystical creation of the universe i.e. Mt. Everest, face to face.

However, due to the influx of adventure enthusiasts in such a huge number, piles of garbage are left behind, causing significant environmental damage.

To address both environmental concerns and infrastructural shortcomings, the region implements permits and entrance fees. 

These charges play a crucial role in funding efforts to maintain, preserve, and promote the historical places and national parks.

So, through the collection of permits and entrance fees, the region ensures that:

The funds are channelled toward preserving the natural beauty

Supporting necessary infrastructure development and 

Promoting the rich historical and natural heritage of the Everest region.

How To Obtain Your Trekking Permit?

Obtaining a trekking permit isn't difficult yet it involves a certain level of hassle. Altogether you need two permits for the Everest region. 

One is for Sagarmatha National Park (SNP) and the other is for Khumbu Rural Municipality (KRM).

Sagarmatha National Park Fee

You can obtain the permit for Sagarmatha National Park either from Nepal Tourism Board, Bhrikuti Mandap, Kathmandu, or Sagarmatha National Park Entry Gate, Monjo. Based on your convenience, prefer what better suits you. Just a heads up: If you happen to prefer guided but uninterrupted trips, we arrange all these so that you can have one heck of an experience in the Himalayas.

But the question?

How much do you have to pay for Sagarmatha National Park Permit?

If you're from non-SAARC countries or foreign nationals, you'll have to pay NPR 3,000 or $ 22.55 (1 USD = NPR 133. 60) per person. 

If you're from SAARC countries, the cost for a permit is NPR 1,500 or $ 11.22 (1 USD = NPR 133. 60) per person. 

If you're a Nepali Citizen, you'll have to pay NPR 100 per person.

Not to forget the 13% VAT of the amount which you'll be paying.

Khumbu Rural Municipality Fee

You should also have to pay Khumbu Rural Municipality fee in Lukla. For the trekkers coming from Jiri or Salleri, you can get it from Sagarmatha National Park Counter, Monjo.

Here's the fee you'll be paying for this permit:

Both foreign nationals and SAARC countries citizens should have to pay NPR 2,000 or $ 14.97 (1 USD = NPR 133. 60) per person for a KRM permit.

And guess what, guys? VAT is not applicable in this case. 

Also, the permit is only valid upto 4 weeks. After 4 weeks, again you'll have to pay NPR 2,500 or $ 18.71 (1 USD = NPR 133. 60) per person. 

Put simply, you'll have to renew your permit every 4 weeks, if you plan to stay longer. Listen, don't forget to take your Passport to get this Permit.

HEADS UP: There's no alternative office in Kathmandu to issue this permit (Khumbu Rural Municipality Permit). Therefore, you've to get it from Lukla or Monjo.

Here's A List Of Consequences Of Ignoring Permits

At times, you may ignore the must-do things because of lack of information. In fact, you won't know about it unless someone else brings it to your attention.

The moment they bring it to your attention you'll realise how stupid you've been the whole time to ignore such an important step.

That’s when you may experience a sense of humiliation for being careless or not practical enough to do things that you should.

But, fret not! We've all been there.

Thank God! With respect to trekking permits, even if you forget, there's nothing to worry about. Why? Because you'll have a couple of options in your hand on the way to get it.

The only thing you have to do is spend a day or two in a rush managing things which may be a bit overwhelming.

When And Where Do You Need To Show Your Permit?

On the way to the base camp, you'll come across a few checkpoints where the government officials ask you for the documents. This's where you'll show your Permit.

These checkpoints have been set up with an intention to keep the record of each visitor who visits the Everest Base Camp.

The records that are maintained at these checkpoints make clear how many tourists visited the camp in specific days, months, or years. 

Not only that, their nationality, date of entry and exit are also well kept. As a result of this, if someone doesn't show up even after an expected date, these records help find out what is the matter. If there's an entry and exit date, it indicates the person has returned.
